Tips After a Race or a Hard Run

Things I want to remind myself to do after a race or a quality run. Sometimes I do all of them, sometimes not. But I think these are good reminders.

1. Stretch
I read somewhere that you stretch so you don’t bring home the pain. Last week, I saw a biker who brought out a 1 foot 2×4 plywood, put it on a slanted surface and started stretching his ankle and calf muscles. I was impressed. Stretching is said to be best done after a run to relax the muscles. Oftentimes we are so lazy and just want to go home. So Stretch!

2. Wear a plastic jacket or windbreaker
A chance to look good doing it. Wearing your adidas or nike jacket. This is to prevent the “lamig” to seep in the body, lets you sweat further and cool down better. I specify the plastic kind since you are still going to sweat on it. Wear the jacket especially if you plan to walk around after a race, check out the booths, chat with friends.

3. Change the shorts and underwear or Wipe it down
Oftentimes I let my wet shorts dry down after a run. Then go home wearing the same shorts! Not a good idea. Bad for the lower back.

4. Change your wet socks to dry ones and put on slippers
I am sure some of us have let the socks dry up after a race. Man, its really a bad practise. First it affects the shoes – makes it brittle and makes it smell. Second its bad for the foot, “lamig” sets in – if you plan to walk around post-race. You would know the effect of “lamig” when you go to a foot massage and yell yourself out when the masseuse starts feeling the lumps on your foot and presses them out.

5. Take in a protein drink.
This one works for me. I found out I have less body pain the next day. I drink Ultimate Nutrition Prostar Whey.

6. Savor a gatorade or a pocari sweat.
I limit myself to one after a hard run drinking it very slowly after the protein drink. To replace lost minerals daw sabi ng Gatorade. :) Then water to take away the sweet heavy taste.

7. Plan what I will eat for the day
There is a tendency to eat all out as a reward for punishing your body after the workout. I on the other hand look at it as the best opportunity to lose weight – 1 pound at least when I look at the scale the next day. I ignore my craving for liempo, crispy pata, burger and chickenjoy. I graze the whole day with entre focused on fish, white chicken meat, and veggies.

8. Rest the body
Simple but some of us have to do our stuff and can’t afford to do this sometimes. Its a good recovery tip. An hour or two of rest or sleep would be ideal.

Mang Max Manghihilot

I mentioned the pain I was feeling from my shin down to my ankles on my left leg in my previous post. When I woke up this morning, it hurt bad when I stood up. I decided not to do anything about it because the pain subsides once I walk and yesterday during my run, it disappeared after my warm up. Like the macho dork that I am, I have made up my mind that I will be racing with the early pain at tomorrow’s Marikina race.

Our kasambahay noticed that I was favoring my left leg when I stood up for breakfast and recommended that I visit a manghihilot nearby. I was about to dismiss the advice but I held off. I thought to myself why not? — I had nothing to lose. And I always have good experiences with manghihilots. I was planning to get a foot massage later to manage the pain anyway. The hilot might work.

I walked over to the barrio near our place and asked about Mang Max the manghihilot. I was instructed to go up a steep 2nd level and knock. The door was opened by Mang Max himself and he welcomed me inside.

I quickly told him about my pain and started ranting that I am a runner blah blah blah. With a soft voice, he asked me to pull a chair and rest my left leg on a stool. He felt the joints in my ankle. When he touched a particular nerve or joint, I told him that was it — and he proceeded to do his thing.

During the process, he mentioned something about 7 ligaments or joints holding the ankle to the foot and that one was misaligned — hence the pain. Then with pride, he narrated the different famous people who have come to seek his service. He also mentioned about the herbal medicine Flanax which he said could be taken for simple joint pain. He also mentioned about the med Pyrazon. I bobbed my head up and down saying “uhuh” at the same time watching him like a hawk.

After a minute or so, I felt something click. He felt it too. And he said it was ok already. I was dubious and a skeptic. I wanted him to massage some more – ala foot spa – because it felt good. Non-verbally he motioned that the work was done so I stood up gently feeling my left ankle — and there was no more of the “main” pain. Wow! I smiled from ear to ear and was already thinking about tomorrow’s run — starting without pain.

I told Mang Max the pain has disappeared and he gave me a knowing smile. I offered payment and he told me to place it in the box below his altar. No amount was mentioned. I put money in the box which I thought was a fair amount and profusely thanked Mang Max. I said I will definitely be coming back.

With this experience, I realize how I love our way of life – our culture. Manghihilots rock! The Philippines rock!
