Official “Garmin” length of 10K Marikina Race

Courtesy of ExFatRunner at Takbo.ph with his trusty Garmin — the offical length of the 10K Takbo Para Sa Kabataang Marikeno is 11.20km. Maraming salamat muli ExFatRunner.

I quickly ran my 1:00:03 time in the various race calculators on-line and came out with a 53.12 min converted time for 10K. It was my average time. Ok na rin.

Race Time – Marikina 10K Race

1:00:03 — I was not able to do a sub 1 hour after consistently breaking it for the last 3 months.

My first thoughts upon crossing the finish line was the race course was too long. I asked other runners as I rested and most of them confirmed the additional length. I was looking for the guy I saw at the starting assembly who had a Garmin to really confirm but I could not locate him.

I felt a bit bad because of my time and the “long” course. I knew I was doing a good strong pace — easily estimating a sub 55 mins. The two long stretches “felt” a tad long.

After I cooled down a bit, I realized that I should not be too preoccupied with organizers not meeting the exact 10K measurement. But for this leniency to work for me, I thought I really need a Garmin to provide me a good feedback to gauge my performance on. I train for the races and I need to know how well I have done.

For the first time, I have a race excuse: I was up until 11pm with my brother for his birthday. I sipped 3 beers from 7pm to 11pm and surrendered to 3 sticks of cigarettes. I felt I was running well throughout the race but felt some fatigue which I point to the late night carousing and the vices. Oh well.

To top it all, my achilles heel hurts today. I really should not have raced to give my left leg time to heal after the “hilot”. During the race the pain subsided but now — I favor the left leg when I walk. I am thinking of having the injury checked by Wednesday if it does not improve and consequently giving up my race bib for this Sunday’s Botak at the Fort.

I want to kick myself for missing the sub 1 hour by only 3 seconds. I was inside the stadium and I should have done some kind of finishing kick.

Till next time.

Log – Intervals at UP

I woke up early at 4:45 am to get a headstart on the day. Today is interval training day. I dressed up quickly in my running attire and stopped by at a 7-11 Tomas Morato for 2 bottles of mineral water and 1 Propel. For breakfast I got 2 pieces piping hot pandesal at Pan De Manila Timog. Sarap. I was on my way to Ultra and decided to pass by Edsa. Big Mistake!

Only 1 lane was open at the Edsa Cubao underpass due to road work. A whole length of the second lane was being stripped off. My taxes at work. Good thing the traffic was generally moving — well it was only 5:15 am. I can sure imagine the chaos a bit later.

When I got to Ultra, another downer. The place was closed down for an event. Hmmm. I have to find a way to be able to check Ultra events before I go here. Sayang ang gas. I decided to head on to UP instead.

Good old reliable UP Diliman. There were a lot of people running and biking already. The weather was perfect — very cool. I call it Baguio weather. Nothing beats the early morning dawn. My task for the day was 5 x 1K to be kept within 4:40-4:50 with a 2minute rest interval. When I reached UP, I decided to measure the 1K distance using my car’s odometer to mark my start and finish points. I was curious about my times because the first 1K part of the course is an incline and the second 1K goes downward.

My left leg hurt a bit from my shin down to my ankes before the run. It’s a good thing after my activation drills and warm up jog that the pain subsided. I am crossingmy fingers my leg gets better in time for Sunday’s race.

My times were:
1st K – 5:00 (incline)
2nd K – 4:41 (decline) – midfoot/heel strike a bit due to downward angle
3rd K – 4:51 (incline) – focused on hitting sub 5mins
4th K – 4:47 (decline)
5th K – 4:53 (incline)

I worked up a good sweat and felt really good after the reps I am getting much comfortable with the pace. I remember the first time I did this I was breathing hard and almost dizzy because of the effort. Now it’s comfortably hard and I can push if I wanted to. Consistent training really helps in the development.
